Stereotypical Asian Tourist

The picture above is not me... but I embody the stereotypical asian tourist. In less than a week I'll be traveling with my family to our next vacation in Hawaii. Like most Asian tourists my family travels to the tourist destinations where we don't fit in the most. For example, last year we visited Puerto Vallarta in Mexico and the year before that we went to Cancun. We posed the pictures with the numerous mariachi bands surrounding the pools, ate enchiladas nearly everyday, and listened to the Pina Colada Song, sure we were experiencing the "authentic Mexico." Like everyother good asian tourist we had our cameras ready at all times for photo ops, and my dad insisted that he call every Mexican, his amigo whether man or woman. Our family will continue this proud tradition in Hawaii. We'll use Aloha whenever possible in a sentence, attend many hotel-planned hulas, and try our hand at surfing. Whether we experience the authentic Hawaii or not I'm sure to have a really good time.

Aloha for now.

By my count, thats the fourth dead "celebrity" in a week. Who's next? I got my fingers crossed for Robert Pattinson and/or Taylor Lautner. Thanks a lot GOD.

I wonder about Michael

Wow he died, that's crazy, but it happens. Hopefully hes in a better place. What do you guys think?
I wonder if the people who hated him feel for his death. I know my grandma loved him no matter what. Shes sobbing. I'm listening to his awesome tunes.
I wonder what their going to do with is body. Are they going to carry it around the country in a car? Are they going to throw his ashes in the sea? Or since rumors are that he's plastic, will he be up for decoration?
I wonder..

Rest in peace M.j. I love your old school stuff.

Racist robots in Transformers!?!

LOS ANGELES - Harmless comic characters or racist robots?

The buzz over the summer blockbuster "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" only grew Wednesday as some said two jive-talking Chevy characters were racial caricatures.

Skids and Mudflap, twin robots disguised as compact hatchbacks, constantly brawl and bicker in rap-inspired street slang. They're forced to acknowledge that they can't read. One has a gold tooth.

As good guys, they fight alongside the Autobots and are intended to provide comic relief. But their traits raise the specter of stereotypes most notably seen when Jar Jar Binks, the clumsy, broken-English speaking alien from Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace was criticized as a caricature.

One fan called the twins "Jar Jar Bots" in a blog post online.

Todd Herrold, who watched the movie in New York City, called the characters "outrageous."

"It's one thing when robot cars are racial stereotypes," he said, "but the movie also had a bucktoothed black guy who is briefly in one scene who's also a stereotype."

"They're like the fools," said 18-year-old Nicholas Govede, also of New York City. "The comic relief in a degrading way."

Not all fans were offended. Twin brothers Jason and William Garcia, 18, who saw the movie in Miami, said they related to the characters — not their illiteracy, but their bickering.

"They were hilarious," Jason said. "Every movie has their standout character, and I think they were the ones for this movie."

In Atlanta, Rico Lawson said people were reading too much into the characters. "It was actually funny," said Lawson, 25, who saw the movie with his girlfriend in Atlanta.

That was the aim, director Michael Bay said in an interview.

"It's done in fun," he said. "I don't know if it's stereotypes — they are robots, by the way. These are the voice actors. This is kind of the direction they were taking the characters and we went with it."

Bay said the twins' parts "were kind of written but not really written, so the voice actors is when we started to really kind of come up with their characters."

Actor Reno Wilson, who is black, voices Mudflap. Tom Kenny, the white actor behind Spongebob SquarePants, voices Skids.

Wilson said Wednesday that he never imagined viewers might consider the twins to be racial caricatures. When he took the role, he was told that the alien robots learned about human culture through the Web and that the twins were "wannabe gangster types."

"It's an alien who uploaded information from the Internet and put together the conglomeration and formed this cadence, way of speaking and body language that was accumulated over X amount of years of information and that's what came out," the 40-year-old actor said. "If he had uploaded country music, he would have come out like that."

It's not fair to assume the characters are black, he said.

"It could easily be a Transformer that upload data," Wilson said. "They were just like posers to me."

Kenny did not respond to an interview request Wednesday.

"I purely did it for kids," the director said. "Young kids love these robots, because it makes it more accessible to them."

Screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman said they followed Bay's lead in creating the twins. Still, the characters aren't integral to the story, and when the action gets serious, they disappear entirely, notes Tasha Robinson, associate entertainment editor at The Onion.

"They don't really have any positive effect on the film," she said. "They only exist to talk in bad ebonics, beat each other up and talk about how stupid each other is."

Hollywood has a track record of using negative stereotypes of black characters for comic relief, said Todd Boyd, a professor of popular culture at the University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts, who has not seen the "Transformers" sequel.

"There's a history of people getting laughs at the expense of African-Americans and African-American culture," Boyd said. "These images are not completely divorced from history even though it's a new movie and even though they're robots and not humans."

American cinema also has a tendency to deal with race indirectly, said Allyson Nadia Field, an assistant professor of cinema and media studies at the University of California, Los Angeles.

"There's a persistent dehumanization of African-Americans throughout Hollywood that displaces issues of race onto non-human entities," said Field, who also hasn't seen the film. "It's not about skin color or robot color. It's about how their actions and language are coded racially."

If these characters weren't animated and instead played by real black actors, "then you might have to admit that it's racist," Robinson said. "But stick it into a robot's mouth, and it's just a robot, it's OK."

But if they're alien robots, she continued, "why do they talk like bad black stereotypes?"

Bay brushes off any whiff of controversy.

"Listen, you're going to have your naysayers on anything," he said. "It's like is everything going to be melba toast? It takes all forms and shapes and sizes."

from Yahoo!

I personally hate it when people get all butthurt and shit about movies. They're are just movies. If you think these robots are stereotyping African-Americans, well you're probably right. However, refry this, what on TV isn't a stereotype?

Shit, even the quirky white people and the Indian on The Big Bang Theory are stereotypes. Well, if you see the show you'd agree with me. Actually, don't see the show, it sucks majorly.

The Asian kid in Up

This kid in the picture to the left is Russell in the new Pixar film Up. At first glance I thought this was no big deal, just another animated character in a Disney movie. But then I realized that his eyes were slightly chinky and I wondered could this be an ASIAN...

So I looked up the movie on Wikipedia and turns out my suspicions were correct. He was asian and as Wikipedia put it "Asian Americans have positively noted Pixar's first casting of an Asian lead character." Damn right, I "positively noted." Not only was this the first time Disney decided to make a movie with an asian kid but this was the first movie I had seen without the use of an Asian doing karate, being a nerd, or some other stereotypical role. Instead of playing tennis Russell is a boy scout and is chunky unlike most skinny asians, and for that I applaud him. I'll finally be seeing the movie this weekend along with the many other happy asians.

We gotta represent.

I heart John Leguizamo

My man Johnny Legs. Man. Homie is without a doubt the most underrated actor in the fucked up media orgy world we call Hollywood. And he's the most versatile too. No me crees? Check it out.

The Violator, Clown from Spawn played by John Leguizamo.

He spent the whole filming time on a freakin' stool doin this role. Kinda like he did with Toulosse in Moulin Rouge, but I really dislike Ewan McGregor so I ain't postin that on here.

Chachi Rodriguez :P also played by John Leguizamo.

In quite possibly the greatest drag queen ever made, To Wong Foo.., Johnny played this buxom young lady. But that aint even why this is so great. Wesley Snipes played a drag queen also, shit! And i read in his book, Wesley and Johnny threw it down on set, IN COMPLETE DRAG. Johnny's got balls.

Sid the Sloth, Ice Age played by guess who? John!

Yeah so after doing voices for Rosie O'Donells HBO christmas special, he thought he might have a knack for voice over roles. So he signed up to play Sid the Sloth. He talks with this Sylvester the cat-ish lisp that comes completely natural. Kinda tops it, even.

However versatile he is, what i have shown you here is just the top of the iceberg. The thing that makes John a legend are his one-man shows. I can't put em on here, but do us all a favor and check them out on the 'Tube.

Transparent Frog..

from Yahoo.

"A salamander that looks like E.T., a micosized frog smaller than a fingernail, and a spiny-crested grasshopper. Who says the age of exploration is dead?

It's definitely not for Conservation International (CI). Their scientists have come back with some startlingly vivid images of endangered and never-before-seen critters from a whirlwind trip to the Nangaritza Protected Forest in Ecuador, near the Peruvian border. CI researchers came across at least 15 species of creatures and plants "unknown to science."

One of the most remarkable creatures is the Hyalinobatrachium pellucidum, also called a glass or crystal frog because you can see through its transparent flesh (right down to its guts). This guy's not new, but he's definitely endangered, so the find is heartening for environmentalists.

The purpose of the three-week biodiversity study was to identify species and make conservation recommendations for ecotourism possibilities, which the Ecuadorian locals are entertaining. It also turns out that frogs and insects yield medicinal properties, and a proper population survey is needed to see what else is out there in the forest.

According to Bloomberg, out of 14 million plants and animals in the world, human beings have been acquainted with only about 1.8 million. Below are more images of new friends; you can find other photos and expedition details at CI's site."

I dont know about you guys, but thats some freaky shit. I still have hope that they will one day find the cloverfield monster.
